What Does It Mean to Truly Be Free?

In this ever changing world, where it seems that we are constantly at odds with ourselves and with our modern society, how can we best gauge our own personal sense of freedom? What is it that speaks into the very depths of our souls and makes it perfectly clear that we are in fact, free?

Free to be… just as we are.

Free to feel…the fullness of our emotions.

Free to express…our thoughts and observations about life.

The ancestors encourage us to understand that true freedom will never come from the external validation of another, but must only come from the internal validation of our awakening hearts. If our hearts are crying out to be healed and to be acknowledged, how can we satisfy this deep yearning by looking to another whose heart is just as hungry for love and acceptance as our own?

Freedom means acknowledging how interconnected we are, not only through our love, but through our pain. It means to see ourselves in the eyes of another, not only through our own sense of power and personal esteem, but through our heartbreaks and the deep wounding that we all share. Freedom is not about releasing ourselves from something or someone. It is about recognizing that we are a part of everything and everyone.

Today, I encourage you to explore what freedom means to you, and the times that you have had to stand in the power of this emotion. How do you express your personal sense of freedom to the outside world?

I also invite you to read and/or listen to, A Meditation on Freedom and to review the interactive activity provided for self reflection on the topic. Explore your own sense of personal awareness by clicking on the link below.
